The private document did not work. It had no addresses, so nothing could point at anything else. It also had no audience, so a weak sentence could stay weak forever. I am opening this notebook in public because those two failures are the ones I actually had, not because the internet needed another marketing site.
This page is the reason. This notebook is the build note. Personal today. If it earns a business later, the business can follow the notes, not the other way around. That order is the whole strategy. Reverse it and you get a pitch with essays glued on.
The work is not a set of services. It is a record of learning.
Not a company site
A company site would have been the wrong correction. The work is not a set of services. It is a record of learning: marketing, psychology, AI, strategy, and the tests in between. The site had to feel like a publication you return to, not a pitch you endure. A pitch asks for trust it has not earned. A publication can be left. The ability to leave is part of why a return visit means something.
I did not want a homepage that offers a call and a menu of capabilities. I do not have a capability menu I am willing to sell. I have a job, a set of questions, and a willingness to write the answers down while they are still rough. Turning that into an agency page would have required inventions: packages, promises, a tone of arrival. I have not arrived. The tagline is the plan. Personal today. Business tomorrow. Tomorrow is not a date I am pretending has happened.
A company site also collapses sections into a funnel. Everything points at a contact button. I wanted sections that can point at each other. An essay points at an experiment. An experiment points at a question list. A journal page points at the reason you are allowed to ignore the contact button, because there is not one pretending to be the point. The point is the record.
Why public, if the audience is not the goal
Public is a constraint, not a growth tactic. A sentence that might be read cannot hide behind "you know what I mean." I know what I mean. That knowledge does not transfer. Writing for a possible reader forces the claim to be specific enough to survive someone who does not share my week. The thirty-day test is where I am checking whether that pressure actually sharpens decisions or only creates a performance. I am not declaring it a success on this page. This page is older than the result.
Public also gives the notes addresses you can send to yourself. A private doc is a place. A URL is a citation. Citations are how a body of work becomes inspectable. Make marketing inspectable is a note about campaigns. It applies to the notebook too. If I cannot link to the week I changed my mind, I will retell it. Retellings get braver and vaguer. The original sentence, dated, does not.
There is a cost. Public writing can sand off the odd true thing. I would rather keep a slightly blunt note than a smooth one that could belong to anyone. The refusal to sound like a generic marketing publication is the same refusal as the positioning. This is a notebook. It will sometimes be unfinished. Unfinished is not the same as careless. Careless is a claim with no way to check.
| Shape | What it is good at | What it did to the learning |
|---|---|---|
| Private document | Capture without friction | No addresses, no pressure, a pile |
| Company site | Asking for work | Turns notes into bait |
| Social feed | Frequent contact | Punishes length and revision |
| This notebook | Dated, linkable notes | Slower, and harder to fake a conclusion |
A structure first
So the first version is a structure. Sections for learning, experiments, notes, builds, books, resources, and a journal. Topics that can grow, including a full map of marketing psychology, even where the notes are still thin. Files in git, so a new essay is a file and not a project. I wanted adding a thought to feel like writing, not like configuring a database.
Thin sections are honest. A psychology map with a few real notes is better than a map stuffed with stubs that pretend to be finished. Stubs are a kind of company-site behavior: cover the territory so nobody thinks you lack a service. I would rather show the gap. The gap is an invitation to write the next true thing, not to commission filler.
The structure also encodes a point of view. Psychology is not a tag on the side. It sits in the middle because the rest of the work fails when you ignore the moment of decision, the budget of attention, and the sequence of trust. That argument has its own page: why psychology sits in the middle. The information architecture is the argument, made walkable.
What I am not promising
I am not promising a weekly cadence. Cadence without a changed belief is activity. Some weeks will have a note because a decision happened. Some weeks should be quiet. Quiet is allowed. A streak is not the product.
I am not promising that the list is a newsletter you can join and receive. The list is not open. The forms say so. Pretending otherwise would break the trust sequence on the first day. A site about trust that fakes a signup has already spent its claim.
I am not promising neutrality. A notebook has a person in it. The person is a CMO learning in public, not a brand character. Where I am unsure, the note should stay unsure. The inconclusive experiment stays inconclusive. That is a feature of a record and a bug in a funnel. I am building the record.
What comes after the opening
After the opening, the work is ordinary. Write the belief. Test one change. Link the result. Review the week in four questions. Stop the sentence that no longer earns its place. None of that requires a launch. It requires the structure to stay boring enough that the notes are the interesting part.
If a business grows out of this, it should be recognizable as the same point of view. The refusal should still be visible. The notes should not be retooled as lead magnets after the fact without saying so. A reader who trusted the notebook should be able to see the change. Hidden conversion is how publications become traps. I do not want a trap with good typography.
The private document failed. The company site would have failed differently, by succeeding at the wrong job. This is the third shape. It is allowed to be early. It is not allowed to be vague about what it is. A notebook. In public. For the learning first.
