The private version of this notebook already failed once. Notes went into a document, the document became a pile, and the pile did not change any decision. Publishing is the constraint I am adding. This test is still running. The page is a log of the rule, the risk, and what I will count when the thirty days are done. It is not a victory lap. A running experiment that reads like a result has already cheated.
The hypothesis: publishing short notes in public will make the thinking more precise than a private document, because a sentence has to survive a reader. Precision, not traffic. A sentence that got sharper. A decision I can point at. If the only change is that a page exists, the test failed even if the page is handsome.
The measure is not traffic. It is whether I can point to a later decision and say which note it came from.
Why the private doc failed
A private doc has no addresses. Nothing can point at anything else, so an idea cannot be reused without rereading the pile. It also has no reader, so a weak sentence does not feel weak. It feels like a draft you will fix later. Later does not come. The draft becomes the record, and the record never has to be clear because nobody is lost in it except you, and you already know what you meant. Meaning it is not the same as writing it.
I am not romantic about the public. A reader is a constraint, not a crowd. Even the possibility of a reader changes a sentence. You delete the hedge you were keeping for yourself. You name the customer you were keeping vague. You notice that two paragraphs say the same thing. Those deletions are the mechanism I am testing. If I publish and the sentences stay as soft as the private ones, the mechanism is wrong and I should say so.
The opening note is the reason the site exists. This page is the test on top of that reason. Structure without the pressure of a reader might still produce a neat pile. I have had neat piles. I want to know whether the public part is doing work or whether I am merely performing a publishing ritual.
The rule for 30 days
For 30 days, each note has to be short enough to finish, specific enough to link, and willing to be wrong in public. Short enough to finish means I do not open a piece I cannot close. An unfinished public note is a private note with a URL. Specific enough to link means another note can point at it without explaining the whole context. Willing to be wrong means I do not sand off the claim until it cannot fail.
The measure is not traffic. It is whether I can point to a later decision and say which note it came from. A decision might be "we will not sound like a course," traced to the positioning notes. It might be "I will not call that subject-line pair a result," traced to the inconclusive test. The trace is the outcome. If I cannot draw the line from note to choice, the note was activity. Activity is not learning.
I am also counting a negative result as valid. If public writing makes me vaguer, because I start writing for an imagined applause, that is a finding. The test does not require the hypothesis to win. It requires me to be able to tell. That is the same manners as any other experiment on this site.
| Rule | Why it is there | What cheating looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Short enough to finish | A pile of openings taught me nothing before | A draft that stays "in progress" past the week |
| Specific enough to link | Precision shows up as an addressable claim | A note that could be about any marketer |
| Willing to be wrong | A sentence that cannot fail cannot teach | Hedging until the claim disappears |
| Trace to a decision | The point is a choice, not a pageview | Celebrating that something was published |
| Update this page at the end | A running test must close | Quietly editing the hypothesis later |
The risk is performance
The risk is performance. Writing for an imagined audience can sand the edges off a real observation. You avoid the sentence that would make a peer uncomfortable. You add a sentence that sounds like the category. You become readable and empty. The counter is the rule from what knowing marketing means: if it does not change understanding, a choice, or a result, it does not get published.
Performance has a particular tone. It announces lessons. It uses "we" when it means "I." It hides the inconclusive result under advice. I am trying to keep the inconclusive pages inconclusive. The subject-line test is allowed to shrug. If I feel myself turning the shrug into a principle so the page feels finished, that feeling is data about the risk. I should write it down, not obey it.
There is a second risk: publishing as procrastination. A note about the work can replace the work. The thirty days are about marketing judgment, not about becoming a person who posts. If a note does not touch a real decision in the job or in this site, it does not count, even if it is well made. Craft is welcome. Craft as a hiding place is the private doc in a nicer shirt.
What I will not count
I will not count compliments. A kind reply is pleasant and easy to over-read. It is availability: one vivid response standing in for a pattern. I will not count a streak of days if the notes do not connect. Thirty isolated tips would be a content calendar, which is the thing this notebook is trying not to be.
I will not count polish. A sentence can be clean and still be unsurprising. Surprise is not the goal either. Use is. Could I hand this note to a later version of a decision and have it change the choice? That is a stricter bar than "would someone nod."
I will not widen the hypothesis mid-test to include traffic if traffic appears, or to exclude precision if precision is hard to show. The hypothesis is already written. Moving it is how running experiments become advertisements.
What "done" will look like
At the end of the thirty days I will update this page with three things. First, decisions I can trace to a note, named, with the link. Second, notes I published that I cannot trace, because those are the failures of the rule. Third, what I would not repeat. If the thing I would not repeat is "writing in public," that belongs here in plain words. If the thing I would not repeat is "writing without a trace," then the hypothesis holds in a modest way.
I will also say whether the private-doc failure mode returned inside the public site. A public pile is still a pile if nothing points at anything. Links are part of the method. A note that does not link, and is not linkable, is a speech. Speeches can be good. They are not this test.
Until the thirty days close, read this as a rule I am under, not as advice I have earned. Advice comes after the update. If you are trying a similar month, write your measure before you start, and make sure the measure is a decision rather than an audience. Audiences are slow and flattering. Decisions are the point of doing the thinking at all.
